    Recruitment:

The position of Police Cadet is a continuous open application process. Applications must be filled out, signed and returned to the Police Department or the Youth Services Office at Will C. Wood or Vacaville High School. Applications can also be submitted online to the Cadet Advisors at VacavillePDCadets@cityofvacaville.com.

A screening process which involves a preliminary background check is conducted on all candidates. Those qualified will take a written test involving general knowledge-type questions and those candidates passing the test will go before an oral interview panel.

    Responsibilities:

The goal of the Cadet Program is to create a foundation for young individuals with an interest in law enforcement and public safety, provide volunteer opportunities serving the Vacaville community, and develop strong, professional young leaders.

As a volunteer of the Police Department, a Police Cadet will be called upon to assist in various divisions within the community while gaining the training and experience that prepares them for their future. Police Cadets are expected to achieve and maintain high standards as representatives of the Police Department and the City of Vacaville.

Cadets attend bi-monthly meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, where they will learn about different aspects of the criminal justice system, such as: fundamentals of law, arrests and detentions, de-escalation techniques, drugs and firearms, crime investigation, and effective report writing. These topics are taught both inside and outside the classroom through scenario-based training and monthly ride-a-longs with Officers.

Additionally, Cadets are taught about the importance of maintaining physical fitness with our in-house physical training program. Physical Training (PT) takes place at the end of each regularly scheduled Cadet meeting and is composed of 30-60 minute workouts, alternating between strength and conditioning exercises that focus on cardiovascular endurance and building strength in all muscle groups.

Many former Vacaville Police Cadets have gone on to become Vacaville Dispatchers, Community Service Officers and Police Officers.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    1. Be between the ages of 14 and 21 (Cadets may remain in the program until their 23rd birthday).
    2. Be currently enrolled in school (to include college courses).
    3. Have and maintain at least a 2.00 grade point average.
    4. Be able to attend bi-monthly meetings held on the first and third Wednesdays of every month.
    5. Be able to pass a written exam, oral interview and background investigation.
    6. Show an ACTIVE interest in the Police Cadet Program.
