Our volunteers serve in several capacities:

• Data entry, scanning and filing, livescanning
• Senior wellness and vacation house checks
• Graffiti abatement
• Park and bike path patrols
• Court courier services
• Department tours
• Community ambassadors
• Recruitment
• Assist at community events (kids fest, national night out, creekwalk, merriment on main & more!)

• If you are a college student in a criminal justice program wanting to become involved in actual police work, becoming a VIPS will not enable you to do this. Individuals seeking this kind of experience are encouraged to apply for the cadet program.
• Individuals seeking internships with Vacaville police department should contact the city of Vacaville’s human resources department for any available opportunities.
• Most assignments require a set schedule of work, if you are only able to volunteer on an occasional basis or only specific hours or days, this type of volunteer program will likely not fit your needs.
• If you are required to complete community service hours for credits or court related purposes, the VIPS program is not geared towards this temporary or court ordered volunteer service.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old
• Reside in the city of Vacaville
• Complete an application and personal history statement (phs)
• Pass an interview and comprehensive background check which includes police and reference checks
• All VIPS are required to complete an initial training program.
• If selected to a team that requires the use of a city vehicle, you must have a good driving record

• The goal is a minimum of sixteen hours per month – or 4 hours per week.
• We ask all volunteers to commit at least one year to the program upon hire.

• Most assignments are daytime hours, monday - friday
• Occasionally there are assignments that can be completed at night or on weekends

• Volunteers receive on-the-job training for their individual assignments. 
• If the assignment calls for the use of department vehicles, VIPS are required to attend yearly driver training.

• After 200 hours of service, volunteers will receive the following items:
  • Class a shirt
  • Class a name badge
  • Tie & tie bar
• Volunteers are responsible for purchasing socks, shoes, and undershirts for both class a and b uniforms.
