The City of Vacaville receives water from three sources for its drinking water:

    • Surface water from Lake Berryessa, transported through Putah South Canal as part of the Solano Project.
    • Surface water from the Sacramento Delta, transported through the North Bay Aqueduct as part of the State Water Project.
    • Groundwater from City-owned local production wells.

These water sources allow the City to manage annual use of the water supply based on each source's availability. The City uses more surface water during wet years, and can rely more on groundwater during dry years. Groundwater conditions are consistently monitored and levels have been stable for over a decade, and it continues to be managed sustainably. The City is also planning to develop recycled water as a future supply for irrigation and industrial uses.

The two surface water sources require treatment at water treatment plants prior to being put into the distribution system. Groundwater is treated at the wellhead and is then placed directly into the distribution system.
